Use the machine as you would a lawnmower, walking along in straight lines up, down and across the lawn. Set the scarifier blades on a high setting at first – you don’t want to go straight in with a low setting and shock the grass. Two passes over the lawn with a scarifier set at two slightly different heights is usually enough, but you can do more passes over the garden if needed. Carry out each pass at right angles to the last, lowering the blades a little on each pass. Once you have scarified the lawn with the petrol scarifier, the thatch and moss will be removed. Then you can re-seed bare patches of the lawn and overseed the entire lawn area generally to encourage full, vibrant, healthy new grass growth throughout your garden.

Please note: You should only scarify a lawn in ideal conditions when the weather is warm, and there is some rain. If you scarify a lawn in extreme weather, you could do more harm than good. For example, suppose you scarify during a period of heavy rain, or extreme conditions like a drought. In that case, the grass will not be able to recover properly and develop into an idyllic full, rich, healthy lawn.
